A History of the PeopleMover

The PeopleMover is a transportation system at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida that has been a beloved part of the park since its opening in 1975. The system, also known as the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, is a slow-moving, elevated train that travels through Tomorrowland. It offers guests a unique and enjoyable way to navigate the park.

The PeopleMover was first conceptualized by Disney Imagineer John Hench in the 1960s. Hench inspired by the futuristic cities depicted in science fiction films and wanted to bring that same sense of innovation and progress to the Disney parks. He proposed the idea of a transportation system that would be both efficient and fun, and it was eventually approved by Walt Disney himself.

The PeopleMover opened on July 1, 1975, as part of the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland expansion. The system consisted of two trains, each made up of ten cars. Likewise the track stretches around the perimeter of Tomorrowland. The trains traveled at a leisurely pace, allowing guests to take in the sights and sounds of the area as they rode.

The PeopleMover quickly became a popular attraction at the park. Additionally, it has undergone several updates and renovations over the years. In 1994, the system was renamed the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and given a new storyline that placed it in the year 2075. In 2009, the attraction closed for refurbishment and re-opened in 2010 with a new look. Of course it features a new color scheme and updated audio-animatronics.

The PeopleMover Today

Today, the PeopleMover continues to be a popular attraction at Walt Disney World Resort. It offers guests a unique and enjoyable way to navigate the park. Likewise, it is a beloved piece of Disney history. The PeopleMover is an example of the dedication and creativity of the Disney Imagineers.
