One of the best parts of D23 is the new media announcements. On Friday, D23 announced a myriad of new Disney movies coming to Theaters and Disney+. While we new about some of these new Disney movies, others provided much anticipated updates.
Hocus Pocus 2
Ahh yes, the long awaited return of the Sanderson Sisters. This weekend Disney dropped a brand new trailer for Hocus Pocus 2. This Disney+ exclusive will be available to watch September 30th. Watch trailer below.
A follow up to the story of Giselle, a head in the sky princess lost in New York City, Disenchanted tells the story of new beginnings. We get a sneak peak into the new lives of our heroes, Pip finds his voice, and we meet a new villain. We also got a first look for this new Disney movie.
It has been 15 years since Giselle (Adams) and Robert (Dempsey) wed, but Giselle has grown disillusioned with life in the city. So, they move their growing family to the sleepy suburban community of Monroeville in search of a more fairy tale life. Unfortunately, it isn’t the quick fix she had hoped for. Suburbia has a whole new set of rules and a local queen bee, Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph), who makes Giselle feel more out of place than ever. Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn’t been so easy to find, she turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family’s future happiness in jeopardy. Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever after truly means to her and her family.
You can stream Disenchanted only on Disney+ starting November 24th.
Peter Pan & Wendy
There’s not too much to tell about this new film except that we get a deeper look into Wendy’s story and experience some back-story of the famous Peter Pan and Captain Hook bitter rivalry. According to the D23 announcement on Friday, Jude Law will be playing Hook in this live-action reimagining of a Disney classic.
While the details are sparse, we were graced by Jamie Lee Curtis and Justin Simien entering the stage on a Doom Buggy. This upcoming live-action film will share the story of a crew who works to rid a mansion of evil spirits and haunted ghosts. We look very forward to this new film.
Mufasa – The Lion King
This announcement took a lot of folks by surprise. We are going to see a prequel to the Lion King told by Pumba, Timon, and Rafiki. In this new Disney movie, audiences will experience young Mufasa in a series of flashbacks. Who knows what kind of story Disney Studios has cooked up but we can’t wait to see what it is. This film was revealed to be in the same hyper-realistic CGI style of its 2019 predecessor.
While we have known about this film for a while now, audiences and Disney fans were treated to Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler sharing more details about the upcoming film. This live-action film directed by Marc Webb will feature award-winning performances and storytelling.
The Little Mermaid
Speaking of first looks, Disney shared details on the upcoming film The Little Mermaid, coming in May 2023. Halle Bailey plays the titular Ariel and we got a sneak peek at her absolutely amazing vocals and the stunning visuals of this underwater adventure.
Featuring fan-favorite songs plus four new songs penned by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the feature film also stars Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Javier Bardem as Triton.
Walt Disney Animation Studios
We got an overload of Zootopia news this week, but one of the most interesting so far is a new Disney+ series called Zootopia+. Coming November 9th, we will head back to the metropolitan, animal-run paradise to dive deeper into our favorite animals’ backstories.
Coming to Disney+ in 2023, Iwájú will share a unique look into the Lagos, Nigeria in the form of a love letter, directors say. This coming-of-age story will introduce Tola, an heiress from a affluent family and her friend Kole. We don’t know too much about this series other than that it is going to be stunning and excellent.
This upcoming Disney Animated film will share the story of a family who, despite their differences, overcomes hurdles and danger in a — you guessed it — Strange World. With an all-star cast, Strange World premiers in theaters on November 23rd.
Ever wonder where wishing on a star originated? Wish, the all new Disney movie, will answer that question. Set to release during the studios 100th anniversary, this epic musical will inspire audiences to dare to dream big. 17-year-old Asha is the protagonist of this new Disney project and, with a sharp wit and optimism, she faces foes and heroically answers her calling.
